Seraphin® Test Measure for DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)

WHAT IS DEF?

DEF is not a fuel or fuel additive, but an operating fluid for Selective Catalytic Reduction technology that is used in diesel-powered vehicles. It is a nontoxic solution of 67.5% water/ 32.5% automotive grade urea. DEF helps convert NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor. It is stable, colorless, odorless, and meets accepted international standards for purity and composition. It is injected into the exhaust system of diesel-powered vehicles to meet the 2010 EPA standards for reduced NOx emissions.

DEF is more susceptible to contamination than gasoline or diesel fuel. It must be handled to prevent introduction of any impurities. Any surfaces that come in contact with DEF must be kept clean and dry.

DEF should only be used with components designed for DEF stainless steel and many additive-free plastics are suitable for use with DEF. DEF systems must be dedicated for use with DEF . Any exposure to hydrocarbon fuels will contaminate DEF .

Meter accuracy is determined by dispensing DEF into a calibrated proving can and noting the volume on the meter register.

Even though DEF is a non-hazardous substance, it cannot be discarded into a storm sewer or anywhere it could reach surface water or groundwater. One disposal option is to return the metered DEF to the supplier. Another alternative is to return the DEF to the storage tank.

DEF is not flammable by WHMIS/OSHA criteria.

· The Seraphin® test measures Series “FS”, “E”, “E2”, or “E3” ARE NOT compatible with DEF.

·  You should use a Seraphin® EESS0005GB-DEF test measure which has all wetted surfaces constructed of compatible DEF materials.

·  The Seraphin® funnels E810030 and E300483 ARE NOT compatible with DEF.

· You should use a Seraphin® E810030-DEF constructed of compatible DEF materials.

· Each Diesel Exhaust Fluid test measure comes with a OPW® magnetic field Mis-Filling Prevention Device, E80488

· Polyethylene compatible cap is provided with each measure

Seraphin® (Patented) "VRTM® system” Test Measure & Funnel

THE VRTM® system CONSISTS OF SPECIAL TEST MEASURE (EESS0020L-VRTM) AND SPECIAL FUNNEL (E810030-VRSF) THAT MUST BE USED TOGETHER TO MEET CANADIAN REQUIREMENTS

Measurement Canada Recognized Retail Fuel Dispenser Test Equipment

The following listed equipment have been evaluated by Measurement Canada for accuracy performance when used to perform inspection of gasoline or diesel retail fuel dispensers. The evaluation of the equipment includes repeatability, linearity and stability. Equipment other than closed loop equipment have been evaluated for effects due to vapor loss when used on gasoline.

Model : EESS0020L-VRTM 20L Vapor Retention Test Measure used in combination with E810030-VRSF Vapor Retention Short Funnel S/S or E80490-VRLF Vapor Retention Long Funnel S/S

Description : The test measure is equipped with a high resolution 3 in. neck with reducer and is used with a mating vapor retention funnel. This equipment, when used together, is designed to minimize vapor loss during inspection by maintaining a saturated vapor space in the test measure.

Henry Oppermann becomes Technical Director
for Seraphin Test Measure

Henry Oppermann, the new Technical Director for Seraphin® Test Measure, has worked in the field of measurement and legal metrology (weights and measures) since 1971. Henry will expand our efforts to provide technical assistance, support and to help customers to find solutions to their measurement problems.

Henry comes to Seraphin with a host of credentials in the areas of legal metrology. He has served as a Metrologist and field inspector with the Wisconsin Bureau of Weights and Measures. He then worked at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST, formerly NBS) where he retired as the Chief of the Weights and Measures Division. Among his responsibilities was the management of programs dealing with model weights and measures laws and regulations, the U.S. transition to the metric system, the standards and test procedures for commercial weighing and measuring devices, laboratory metrology, and NIST participation at the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML). Throughout his career at NIST, he was actively involved in the work of the National Conference on Weights and Measures.

Seraphin® Test Measure is proud to welcome Mr. Oppermann, as our new Technical Director and invites our customers to feel free to contact him at hoppermann@seraphinusa.com.
